PTW vs Avon

Pallotta TeamWorks figures from “Record of Impact, Pallotta Teamworks 1994–2002” (Los Angeles, 2006). The totals raised by participants includes $6.2 million in registration fees. Avon figures from Avon financial statements. Those for 2006 are based on $46,723,824 total income, which Avon states was “from the public,” plus a $4,007,777 contribution from Avon Products, less $2 million from the Avon Foundation Awards Celebration, which, according to an Avon press release, “raised nearly $2 million.” The figures for 2006 may include income from Avon’s Need for Speed Relay Against Domestic Violence. Those for 2005 are based on $36,843,908 total income, which Avon states was “from the public,” plus a $4,007,779 contribution from Avon Products, less $2 million from the 50th Anniversary Gala. (An Avon press release says, “The event raised $2 million.”) The figures for 2004 are based on $36,278,911 total income, which Avon states was “from the public,” plus a $3,189,176 contribution from Avon Products less $2.2 million from the Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer event per Avon’s website. net income for grantmaking

The $70.9 million figure for the 2002 Pallotta TeamWorks event is based on gross participant income of $145,372,218 (from Avon 2002 financial statements) and subtracts $2 million in proceeds from Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer (per Avon press release) for an adjusted gross participant income of $143,372,218. The net figure specified for Pallotta TeamWorks is calculated by subtracting from the adjusted gross participant income the sum of (1) event expenses of $71,852,150 shown as fundraising (from Avon 2002 financial statements), and (2) $596,000 in estimated expenses from Avon’s Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer event (using a $2 million income figure [from Avon press release] and applying its 30 percent cost ratio from the 2001 Kiss Goodbye event.) The figure does not include income or expenses for Avon’s 2002 Boogie for Breast Cancer event. See note on previous tab for information on gross income for the 2003 Avon event. The net figure for the Avon 2003 event is calculated by subtracting from the gross income the sum of (1) $10,231,852 in total event expenses shown as fundraising (from Avon 2003 financial statements), and (2) $7,822,416 in joint costs allocated to the Breast Cancer Crusade (also from Avon 2003 financial statements), and adding back $596,000 in already deducted estimated expenses from the Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer event (using a $2 million income figure [from PR Newswire] and applying its 30 percent cost ratio from the 2001 Kiss Goodbye event). Joint costs are deducted in order to achieve a fair comparison, as no event-related costs were allocated to programs on the 2002 Pallotta TeamWorks figures.

The 2004 figure is calculated by subtracting from Avon’s gross income (see note for previous tab) the sum of (1) $8,303,428 in total event expenses shown as fundraising (from Avon 2004 financial statements), and (2) $8,536,213 in joint costs allocated to the Breast Cancer Crusade (also from Avon 2004 financial statements); and adding back $655,600 in already deducted estimated expenses from the Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer event (using a $2.2 million income figure [from the Avon website] and applying its 30 percent cost ratio from the 2001 Kiss Goodbye event). The 2005 figure is calculated by subtracting from the gross income (see previous tab) the sum of (1) $8,478,286 in total event expenses shown as fundrais ing (from Avon 2005 financial statements) and (2) $8,322,589 in joint costs allocated to the Breast Cancer Crusade (also from Avon 2005 financial statements); and adding back $596,000 in already deducted estimated expenses from its 50th Anniversary Gala (using a $2 million income figure [from Avon press release] and applying the 30 percent cost ratio from the 2001 Kiss Goodbye event). Joint costs are deducted in order to achieve a fair comparison, as no event-related costs were allocated to programs on the 2002 Pallotta TeamWorks figures.
